Honourable MEC Siphokazi Lusithi recently conducted an oversight visit to the construction site of the new Addo Primary School. The project, which began on 13 October 2023, includes the construction of 12 new blocks, along with external works, electrical installations and mechanical systems. The construction is aimed at addressing the issues of aging school’s infrastructure, poor school buildings and grounds that tend to be hazardous to pupils and negatively impacting on the day-to-day teaching and learning.
The project is currently sitting at 52% completion, Odwa and Solie Trading Enterprise has been contracted to manage the construction over a 24-month period. The scheduled completion date for the project is 12 October 2025.
The total contract sum for the construction of Addo Primary School is R57 403 761,52 with R20 240 095,41 certified to date. The project has currently utilized 35% of the budget, reflecting steady financial progress in line with the construction timeline.
The project demonstrates a strong commitment to social responsibility by incorporating Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) into various work packages. This includes assigning specific construction tasks such as brickwork for classroom blocks, external works, and guard house construction to different SMMEs. Notably, some contracts are already awarded, like those to Khanyo Bukhosi Construction and Mthembubutsha Enterprise for classroom brickwork, while other packages will be advertised later in October 2024, ensuring opportunities for more SMMEs to participate. This initiative supports local economic empowerment, encouraging the participation of multiple SMMEs in key construction and service roles.
Shirese Jordaan, Principal of Addo Primary School, expressed her heartfelt appreciation to the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure for their commitment to the project. She highlighted the positive impact the construction has already had on the school, stating that the improved infrastructure has enabled the school to increase its learner capacity. “The school has experienced growth in its current enrollment and is preparing to welcome 50 additional learners next year, she adds.
The visit by MEC Lusithi emphasizes the importance of government oversight in ensuring that such critical projects are completed on time and to the highest standard, bringing much-needed educational infrastructure to communities across the region.
