MEC Siphokazi Lusithi undertook a productive oversight visit to Komani recently, focusing on the assessment of key construction projects. The projects the MEC visited included the doctors’ and nurses’ residences at Frontier Hospital, Kingsway Flats as well as Komani Palms.
The purpose of the visit was to evaluate progress, ensure project alignment with community needs, and highlight the positive impact these developments have on the local area.
These projects are part of the broader strategy to enhance healthcare infrastructure and support frontline medical staff in Komani. The details are as follows:
- At Frontier Hospital, substantial progress has been made, with the main structures nearing completion and internal fittings now in progress.
- Kingsway Flats phase one (1) is close to reaching its completion, and the installation of essential services is ongoing.
- At Komani Palms, the groundwork is complete, indicating steady advancement towards the projected goals with electrical, fire detection and installation of balustrade at ramp currently underway.
The highlight of these projects is the substantial number of local laborers that have been employed across the construction sites, providing much-needed job opportunities. In addition, approximately nine (9) local Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) have been contracted, involving a total of 108 skilled SMME workers, which has supported business expansion and positively impacting the local economy. Furthermore, these construction projects have provided employment opportunities for 17 local general laborers and 12 local semi-skilled laborers, resulting in a combined total of 29 local laborers employed.
The total investment across all three projects amounts to approximately R85 million. While initial timelines faced minor adjustments due to a variety of challenges, the revised completion dates for phase 1 are now set for May 2026 for Frontier Hospital, March 2026 for Komani Palms and February 2026 for Kingsway Flats. These new timelines reflect the commitment to quality.
MEC Lusithi expressed her satisfaction with the progress made and commended the contractors and workers for their dedication. She reaffirmed her commitment to supporting initiatives that bolster healthcare infrastructure while creating local opportunities. “The community can now look forward to the successful completion of these projects, which will not only improve healthcare services but also foster economic growth in Komani,” stated MEC Lusithi.
