The Honourable MEC Pemmy Majodina accompanied by Managing Director (MD) of MTN Dr. Kusile Mtunzi visited Mzontsundu Senior Secondary School in Quzini village outside King Williams Town on a surprise “Back to school” campaign visit.
Mzontsundu is one of 50 schools in the province to benefit from the Hon. MEC’s “back to school” initiative. This was done by sourcing sponsorships to benefit the children and educators of these identified schools.
The Hon MEC said “I do not have a lot of money that would allow me to open my hand to reach out as much as I would like, but I have friends who have friends that allow for me to assist where I can”.
MTN sponsored the school with a fully furnished computer lab with internet connected computers and projectors. This initiative is to make education easy and efficient for the pupils to be computer literate and assist the students to be in par with the globally evolving technological world.
The Hon MEC with Dr. Kusile addressed the Grade 12 class of 2019. Hon MEC Majodina said that they must not be defined by the situation they are in right now, “You must dream big, dream of big castles in the sky above, no one is born to have it hard for all their lives, and no one is born to be a failure, the sky is the limit with hard work” said Hon MEC Majodina. She concluded by saying “Books before boys because boys bring babies”
Dr. Kusile Mtunzi encouraged the girl child to be strong, stand their ground and strive to be empowered all the time, “You will be seating for exams very soon, whether you pass or fail, let that not define who you are, be defined by the person you want to be. Make good choices for yourself, because choices you will make will define the person you become at the end” she said.
A leaner representative from the school, Ncaphayi Lutho, thanked the Hon MEC, Dr. Kusile and officials for coming back to their school and providing the much needed support for them as learners to succeed. He went on to promise that the pass rate for 2019 will increase from 75.5% to 100%.
