The Mcwebeni community is set to get new Council chambers as the department is constructing the Mcwebeni Traditional Council Chambers. The department, as an implementing agent, does the work on behalf of the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA).

The project is estimated to cost slightly above R3 million for a duration of eight (8) months. The bulk of the work is performed by an internal team of Quantity Surveyors, Architects and Engineers.

The scope of the work includes: carpentry, brick work, boundary fencing, ceilings, plastering, tiling, paving and painting. “The project is 90% complete with just minor touches to ensure that the building is ready for occupation. The project is on track with regards to timeframes set and will be handed over to COGTA in time” said Ntombikayise Sokupa, Project Manager.

Sokupa further highlighted a challenge they faced at the start of the project, “Upon excavation of the pit toilet, there was underground water seeping through. The Engineer provided a subsoil drainage methodology to help counter act the problem” said Sokupa.

The project has helped employ ten (10) local labourers which comprise of two (2) females and eight (8) males which two (2) of them are youth.
