In a move aimed to boost employment and economic growth in the Eastern Cape, MEC for Public Works, Infrastructure and Human Settlements Siphokazi Lusithi and the Minister for Employment and Labour Nomakhosazana Meth handed over contracts worth over R906 million to Local Authorities Procurement (LAP) Companies.

The contract handover ceremony was held at the Mthatha Stadium in the King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality on 28 February 2025. This initiative forms part of the  Department of Employment and Labour’s programme to create jobs and over 21000  job opportunities will be created.

Addressing people at the stadium MEC Lusithi said one of her Department’s top priorities is to create more job opportunities for the unemployed, in particular the youth.  “Supporting business owners in the province is crucial for enhancing the exceptional nature of the region, especially within the KSD Municipality,” she said.

The success of this initiative depends heavily on the collaboration between the national government and local authorities to deliver essential services to the community.

MEC Lusithi added: “The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure is committed to working hand in hand with stakeholders to eradicate poverty and create job opportunities for the youth in this area.”
